Choose a ship layout for the problem you have
Keep modules compact when adjacency effects and crew travel are your immediate problem. Give the outside route more length when enemies reach the Airlock too quickly. The useful layout is the one that also leaves suitable module space and firing positions for the kits you actually have.

A compact factory favors adjacency and travel
The developer’s first layout packs more modules next to one another. That helps adjacency mechanics from artifacts and reduces the distance humans travel between jobs. Choose this direction when scattered rooms are making the factory awkward to run.

The second official layout creates a longer enemy route and more varied firing positions. Drop pods land across much of the outer surface; stretching that route spreads their landing points. The October devlog places bosses on the far-left, uppermost part of the ship, furthest from the Airlock.
Enlarge ↗Put the gun where its range can work
The developer suggests an open stretch or exposed corner for a long-range turret. A short-range turret can suit a small enclosed section formed by a gap between construction blocks. Match the position to the gun you have; moving it later is possible, but slow and followed by downtime.
| Priority | Useful direction | Check before building |
|---|---|---|
| Factory adjacency and crew travel | Compact module arrangement | Room for the module kits you want |
| More distance before the Airlock | A longer outer route | Airlock and Engine access stay clear |
| Long-range coverage | Open area or exposed corner | A useful line of fire from that position |
| Short-range coverage | Small enclosed section or gap | Enemies actually pass through the covered area |
Keep the permanent constraints in view
Hull blocks cannot be rotated or destroyed once placed, and must not block the Airlock or Engine. New module construction requires a completed neighboring module. Decorative outer-hull elements do not change the aliens’ route, so judge the actual construction path rather than decoration.
